Alien Army
The End
— CD
(Bomb Hip Hop/BHH2062)

The End - the stunning second album from Italian hip hop DJ supergroup Alien Army, and the first available outside of Europe, has already drawn comparisions to both D-Styles' Phantazmegorea and QBert's Wave Twisters. And no wonder since like those two Invisibl Skratch Piklz famed DJs, the six-member Alien Army also possess a powerfully unique strong song structure approach to turntalbism: something often absent from the "skratch" music genre. "What sets Alien Army apart from even some of the best hip hop scratch DJs of today, even many of their fellow DMC or ITF champs, is that they make good head-nodding hip hop music that is universally appealing," said Billy Jam of Hip Hop Slam Records, who has featured Alien Army's music on several of the criticaly acclaimed compilations released on his US label including Global Turntables and Scratch Attack: the LP which also featured QBert and Steinski. Dave Paul of BOMB Hip Hop, who pioneered the current turntablist craze with his infamous Return of the DJ series, agrees that Alien Army are a most unique DJ collective. "They are not just amazing scratch DJs but more importantly quality producers who make hip hop songs, complete with choruses and hooks. The kind of tracks that you keep hitting the repeat button on. But what's really amazing about Alien Army is that they create all this great music on just turntables!"

Featuring the DJ/producers Zak, Skizo, Inesha, MicroMetz, Type10, and Tayone, Alien Army have been together for the past seven years. In that time they have become national DJ heroes in their native Italy: winning hands down twelve national DJ battle titles (DMC and ITF) and releasing the first all scratch album in Italy (Orgasmi Meccanici, 1998). They have also become mainstays on Italian radio and Television with regular appearances on MTV Europe. Additionally their expansive discography includes a slew of 12" singles, battle records, and mix-CDs. DJ Skizo, the groups founding member, says that "The End" is what they are most proud of after spending the past year-plus honing it to perfection. For proof check out such instantly likable tracks as the sinister "Destroy" (already a hit single in Italy), the spooky mood-induced "Daily Nightmares" and the track that features US guest DJ Radar, "The Terrible Invasion Pt. 1." "Our goal with this album," said DJ Skizo, "Was to combine the ultimate frontiers of the so called scratch music, passing through electronic, electro, abstract hip-hop and downtempo."

Cut Chemist Meets Shorkut
Live at the FuturePrimitive SoundSession
(v1.1) — CD
(Future Primitive)

70:00 minutes, 23 tracks - and not one second will you want to fast forward on this turntablist classic that captures two of the best DJs in the West. LA's Cut Chemist and San Francisco's Shortkut, two equally talented yet distinctively different styled DJs, are captured in this mesmerizing 1997 session that the FuturePrimitive producers advise to be file under "San Francisco Beat Culture". This CD, which we only have a limited number of copies, is a truly amazing, drop-dead mix of music that finds Cut Chemist and Shortkut perfectly complimented. Like all of the other CDs sold at this site, where we respect the music but hate the music-gaffling industry whose overpriced CDs drove people to downloading and digital copying, we sell Cut Chemist meets Shortkut for only $8.98.

DJ Craze
Crazee Musick
— CD
(Bomb Hip Hop)

This often forgotten 1999 classic from one of the world's most acclaimed DJs, DJ Craze. What makes DJ Craze different from other turntablists is that he rocks a party for two hours, not just a routine of ten minutes. His dj sets feature hip-hop, breakbeat and jungle with some mesmerizing body tricks, lightning quick mixes and beat juggles that have set him apart from any other DJ. Craze is continuously traveling the world performing in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Japan and various other countries. Craze is the 3-time dj champion of DMC! He has been featured on DJ Faust's Man or Myth album, the Fathomless EP (with DJ's Faust and Shortee) and was featured in Time Magazine! Crazee Musick, his debut album, was a hit with his intricate style of hip-hop, jungle, drum n bass and abstract music."

DJ Dank's
Biggest (bong) Hits
— CD
(Hip Hop History Series/002)

Hot on the heels of the popular St. Ides rap compilation DJ Drank's Greatest Malt Liquor Hits in the "Hip Hop History Collectors' Series" comes DJ Dank's Biggest (bong) Hits featuring the best of West Coast 1990's hip hop/rap dank (weed) anthems including Tha Alkaholiks' "Mary Jane," Luniz' "I Got 5 On It (Remix)," and Total Devastation's "Many Clouds of Smoke." With every other hip hop track including some reference to getting high there are tons of rhymes about joys of the sticky green. And one of the best times for weed anthems, especially on the West Coast, was the first half of the nineties (hip hop's "blunted" era) when Dr. Dre released "The Chronic," Cypress Hill reigned supreme, and such classics as RBL Posse's "Don't Gimme No Bammer Weed," Total Devastation's "Many Clouds Of Smoke," The Luniz' "I Got Five On It," and The Pharcyde's "Pack The Pipe" were all released. Also released in this period was Ice Cube's 1995 movie Friday - now one of the classic weed movies and one with a great soundtrack. Friday paid homage to it's predecessor, Up In Smoke (look for the Cheech & Chong movie poster on Smokey's bedroom wall next to his Cypress Hill collector's edition velvet glow-in-the-dark weed poster), and can be credited with setting the stage for such more recent weed flicks as How High and Half Baked. The so-bad-it's-good Leprechaun In The Hood boasts a classic weed moment when Ice T shares "the bomb" with the evil lil green fella ("A friend with a weed is a friend indeed!"). Note that back in 1993 when it seemed like everyone was getting blindly blunted the lone dissenting voice of Boots offered up an alternate view ("ain't no revolution gonna come from the blunted") in "The Last Blunt" on the Coup's debut, "Kill My Landlord."

TRACKING

01) "Its Dank Time"
02) Young 'D'Boyz "Mr. Chronic" (1995)

DJ Golden Chyld
Ear Infections
— CD
(Fingerbanger Records/FBR-5817)

Full-Length Album — No Track Listing

Produced and mixed by Golden Chyld of the world's famous Finger Bangerz DJ crew outta San Jose. In fact Golden Chyld co-produced the Finger Bangerz album "VI-R-US" that dropped last year. Hence it is not surprising that "Ear Infections" boasts the same richly layered production values that the popular Finger Bangerz' group release also did. For those of you unfamiliar with the great DJ's history, "Sir" Golden Chyld won the San Francisco heat of DMC 2001 to go on to compete in U.S. Finals and appeared on the widely distributed DMC US Finals DVD. Other accolades include the 2000 ITF Western Hemisphere Team Champions along with the rest of the Fingerbangerz which was also distributed world wide on VHS plus he has performed many times with internationally renowned acts such as Phife Dog from A Tribe Called Quest, Afrika Bambaata, Souls of Mischief, Hieroglyphics, Living Legends, Q-Bert, MixMasterMike, Shortkut, Dj Ztrip, DJ Craze and Atrak. He has also appeared on "Used Soul" fellow Fingerbangerz G-Wrex and Replay, as well as on such compilations as "Deep Concentration" (OM), "Return of the DJ III" (Bomb), and on the Hip-Hop Slam "Turntables by the Bay" series.

History of the Hip Hop DJ Vol. 5
— CD
(Hip Hop History Series/008)

History of the Hip-Hop DJ Vol. 5 focuses on the 1980's when every new release (album or single) heavily featured the DJ. BONUS clips include Africa Bambaataa talking about early eighties New York when hip-hop and punk/new-wave melded together, Grand Wizzard Theodore talking about the first day he scratched, Kool Herc discussing the definition of a hip-hop DJ. Also included is an excerpt from a rare 1984 German release (only 50 cassettes pressed up) by the short-lived teenage B-Boy/DJ duo, the Berlin Beatmasters - whose only release was that lo-fi cassette and whose influences included Kraftwerk, New Order, Egyptian Lover, and K-Tel "how-to breakdance" records.

History of the Hip Hop DJ Vol. 6
presents Z-TRIP
— CD
(Hip Hop History Series/009)

NOTE: Due to the extremely limited nature of this release,
only one copy per person is allowed!

History of the Hip Hop DJ Vol. 6 traces the prolific DJ Z-Trip over the past decade. Born Zach Sciacca, Z-Trip started DJ'ing at age 13. As part of Arizona's Bombshelter DJs (with DJs Radar & Emile) he caught the attention of BOMB Hip-Hop Records who invited him to contribute to the pioneering 1995 Return of the DJ Vol. 1 (#7). This marked the beginning of his close relationship with BOMB (#10, 14) and the Bay Area music scene. He also contributed to Bay Area labels OM (#3), Ubiquity (#9), Tino Corp, and Future Primitive (#2,16). In November 1997 he played his first (of many) Future Primitive Sound Session parties. He also played other parties including "Oddball" at 330 Ritch in 2000 (#19). This rare collection also offers excerpts from some of his mix tapes (usually 500 copies made) including Z-Trip The Unknown (#8, #13) and B-Boy Breaks Vol. 3 (#21). History of Hip Hop Radio Vol. 1 — CD
(New York, 1986-1991)
(Hip Hop History Series/021)

CAPTURES NEW YORK HIP-HOP RADIO IN THE EIGHTIES AND START OF NINETIES

Historic New York hip-hop radio from 1986 to 1991 when the airwaves were dotted with truly dedicated shows on various stations (both commercial and non-commercial) enthusiastically breaking this new art form. This retrospective offers the mic-breaks between the music that capture a whole other period in hip-hop culture. It was a comparatively innocent time when rappers gave their Zodiac sign and DJs (like P-Fine in 1986 on WNYU's "Rap This") would sincerely ask hip-hop guests what their favorite food was.

DEDICATED TO THE AWESOME TWO: Teddy Tedd and Special K, AKA "the
ambassadors of hip-hop" have been putting it down for New York hip-hop
radio since 1983 on WHBI, which later became WNWK. In the late eighties
WNWK's late night Saturday lineup a station was the Awesome Two, followed
by Kevin Keith & the Dirty Dozen, and Hank Love & DNA and (later) Half
Pint. The Awesome Two currently do a hip-hop show in the New York studios
of Sirius Satellite Radio.

DJ Prank's
Greatest Celebrity Phone Calls

With the celebrity voices of Arnold, Pacino, and Pesci in those famous (*thanks to the Internet) prank phone calls such as the much loved "I’m a cop you idiot," "Stop Whining!", "You just cost me $6,000!" and of course "Who is your daddy and what does he do?", plus brief DJ skratch interludes spun or scratched by DJ Prank, this is a good CD to have. Mutation Mann — CD
(Reverse Techniques/2003)

Six tracks, IDs every ten minutes. Very limited edition pressing. Under the alias Mutation Mann, DJ Quest has released (in our opinion) the best album of the 2003 to date! It is an amazing and unique type of Mix-CD meets Scratch-CD, aptly described by its maker as "hardcore thumpin hip-hop electro dark underground smooth breakbeat type shit with flavor." Exactly! It is a must-have for real hip hop fans, fans of mix-CDs, and of course
skratch fanatics. Listening to it, as we have repeatedly, proves why so many rightly consider Quest the best (albeit underrated) DJ in the world. Apparently the Live Human/Space Travelers DJ took all of the music off of a ton of break records. And if you listen closely you can trace each beat and sound back to its respective battle record.

What About Us? — CD
(Hard Knock Records/HKCD-001)

reviewed by Billy Jam/hiphopslam.com

This is one of the best goddam albums of 2003 but you wouldn't know it from the bullshit music industry which is run by apolitical, profit driven, self-serving fucks who wouldn't know a good hip hop record if it knocked them in the balls! Besides even if one of those few hip hop industry entities who sign or distribute or promote or program music were to give this album a listen with the probability of "working it" they would inevitably be scared away by its anti-War content, fearing it might attract trouble in an era when being anti-WAR = pro Terrorist, and hence might hinder future possible profits. Too bad coz this is a rarity today: an inspiring, intelligent, reality rap record, one that will make you think as well as move your feet.

What About Us? was put together by Hard Knock Records in association with Hard Knock Radio. In fact one of that KPFA radio show's hosts, Davey D, is featured on both the spoken word "Intro" over a beat and also on the "Barbara Lee" interview excerpt: a historical phone-in that Davey conducted with the outspoken congresswoman on KMEL shortly after the 9/11 attacks. And one which led to his firing from the Clear-Channel owned station (where he had worked for eleven years!). There is not one bad track out of all eighteen on this uplifting hip hop collection. However definite standouts include Spearhead's "Bomb The World" featuring Michael Franti, Radioactive, Ledisi, LZ, and Sly and Robbie on this infectious track which is by far the number one peace anthem of the Dubya era. "We Can" by Raashan Ahmad (who is destined for big success) is one of those simple hip hop songs that just gets ingrained in your skull and has you humming its chorus for days. Same for "Hey Bobby" by the Non Prophets featuring Sage Francis who is one smart and observant muthafucka, and bold to chide some of his fellow Americans by projecting that even if there were a revolution they would probably just go out loot.

Meanwhile "US History" by Oakland's The Piper is a cleverly told US-at-war history lesson neatly packed into one hip hop song (quite an accomplishment considering how frequently the WAR-happy US has been over the past few decades). Reggae fans will love both the upbeat, head-bobbing "Yo Naci" by Rico Pabon and DJ Riddm, and "Lickshot!" by the underrated East Bay crew Lunar Heights. Although more about the sorry state of the music industry today, than about war and peace, "Work Itself Out" by Bukue One is actually the perfect choice for this financially struggling tiny independent label release, one which will most likely suffer the same type of music industry dismissal outlined so eloquently in the emcee's sad-but-true observations on the music BU$INE$$. Meaning that it will most likely be ignored when it should be celebrated since this is the type of thought-provoking hip hop release we need to hear, especially in these post Patriot Act times. This is the type of album that we used to take for granted back in ye olde daze of hip hop: back in a time when radio DJs played songs they felt, not got told or paid to play. A time in hip hop when being conscious or speaking out on the bullshit in AmeriKKKa was the norm rather than a risky career move. And as such "What About Us?" is a breath of fresh air in a smog of complacent hip hop mediocrity.
